Another Betonsports Arrest?
Documents filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District
of Missouri indicate Steinberg held
Although no details have yet emerged on where and how he was arrested,
it appears that Norman Steinberg, who has been associated with Gary
Kaplan and the moribund BetonSports.com, is being held by federal
authorities.
In documents filed yesterday (Tuesday) before the District Court
for the district of Eastern Missouri, US Attorney Catherine Hanaway
and other federal officials from the Department of Justice Organized
Crime and Racketeering Section requested the detention without bail
of Norman Steinberg, aka Tom Miller and David Norman, apparently
arrested and taken into custody regarding the United States' case
against BetonSports. The case number is No. S1-4:06CR00337 CEJ (MLM)
The detention is requested for a period of three days, presumably
pending a bail hearing, and it is understood that the application
for detention was granted on grounds that the accused is a flight
risk.
Steinberg is thought to be one of the last remaining fugitives
in the BetonSports case, which involves some eleven defendants on
an indictment that lists a number of serious charges.
The case started with the arrest of BoS CEO David Carruthers almost
a year ago whilst he was transitting the USA on his way to Costa
Rica. Carruthers remains on heavy bail and confined to a house in
St. Louis, Missouri pending trial. More recently, Gary Kaplan, the
founder of BoS was arrested in Dominica and extradited to the US
where he is in custody awaiting trial.
The case ruined BetOnSports, which earlier this year pleaded guilty
and agreed to assist the authorities going forward. The company
is headed toward liquidation as a result of having lost all of its
predominently US business.
