Video Poker Strategy – Jacks Or Better

There are many different types of video poker to be found in the casino and on casino websites but there are two or three that are the most common. Jacks or Better is not only one of the most common but it is also one of the most popular. There are ways to play Jacks or Better video poker machines and heighten your chances of winning. Don’t forget that one win doesn’t make you a winner, only consistently walking away with more money than you started will give you that particular honor.

The aim of video poker is quite different to normal poker because you are not playing to beat another hand and instead you are playing solely to get a winning hand. In Jacks or Better a winning hand is a pair of Jacks or better. This means that while a pair of tens may be a good basis to form a winning hand, it is not a winning hand in itself. Two pairs or three of a kind will always be a winning hand regardless of the cards involved. In order to optimize your chances of success there are certain strategic plays that you should make. These plays are listed in order of preference with the most preferable appearing at the top.

If you are dealt four cards that would make up a royal flush then hold these four. Even if the fifth card makes up a pair you should scrap it in preference for the chance to get the royal flush. This is the only time you should break up winning cards and in all other circumstances if you are dealt paying cards then you should hold them. If you do not have paying cards but you do have three cards towards a royal flush then hold them.

If you receive four cards that go towards a straight flush then hold these because a straight flush still pays out well despite not being as much as a royal flush. Also hold three cards that make up the beginning of a royal flush. Four cards of the same suit is a promising hand and so you should hold these in the hope of getting a flush hand.

Hold a low pair that does not make a paying hand. This is in the hope that you will either draw another pair or another card of the same face value to give three of a kind. Four consecutive straight cards is also a powerful hand so hold these cards, and hope to draw the fifth or the first in the series.

2 high cards present you with a good number of potential winning hands. Hold them and scrap your remaining cards. Three cards towards a straight flush is the next hand in order of preference so hold these and scrap the remaining the two. Jack, Queen and King of different suits can make a paying pair or possibly even better so hold these in preference to discarding them. Any two high cards of the same suit also has reasonable potential and if you don’t have any of the hands above then hold these two cards. Only hold a ten if you have a higher card in the same suit and failing any of these being evident in your hand then you should hold a single high card.

Obviously, if you don’t have any of these then you will need to discard all five of your cards and draw an entire new hand. Don’t hold on to lucky cards or a series of cards with a hole in the middle unless they are in the same suit. If you follow these rules you should find that your Jacks or Better results would be much better than blindly holding and discarding cards.
