False Cutting and
Shuffling Cheats in Poker
There are many methods
by which a sophisticated poker dealer can create an advantage for
himself without your being any the wiser. One of those
methods is called false cutting. A poker dealer
who cheats using false cutting must have an accomplice sitting next
to him since the idea is to arrange the deck in the specific order
he desires while keeping an unwanted card on top. The next step
is to get his partner to take the deck so that he can pull the cards
beneath the top card out while making sure the top card stays.
The cards in the stacked deck thereby remain on top of the deck
exactly where the dealer wants them to be.
At other times when
the dealer has no accomplice and is forced to work alone, there
is an alternate false cut technique that he can use. Using
this technique, the dealer tries to discover the hole card of an
opponent during a five card poker game. How does he do this?
The dealer takes note of a certain card which he then keeps in position
at the top of the deck courtesy of a false cut. Whichever
card he chose will now be on top of the uncut part of the deck which
the dealer picks up and places atop the other portion of the deck.
It appears that the dealer put the bottom part of the deck on top,
exactly how an honest cut would be completed. That being the
case, any call for a second cut is usually bypassed. At this
point, the dealer begins tossing out the cards all the time knowing
what his opponent got.
Still another method
of cheating utilized by dexterous dealers involves the shuffle.
An expert dealer is actually capable of shuffling cards so that
they all wind up right back in their original position as when he
opened the deck. That’s how good some of these guys are.
Of course, not everyone who can utilize the false shuffle does so
in the same way. Some of them are much slicker at it than
others. For those who aren’t the best in the world at it,
false shuffling involves a little bit of talent and lot of distraction.
The basic fact of poker life is that far too many players, especially
in amateur games, don’t pay enough attention to the shuffle.
When that’s the case, a good dealer need only keep you distracted
enough so that you don’t pay attention to the fact that he is leaving
the corners of the pack unmeshed while he riffles them. He
also needs to keep you distracted as he eases one half over the
other when he squares the cards. If he’s good enough, he will
do this fast enough that you won’t even question whether he is actually
shuffling the cards or not. Be aware, however, that this isn’t
shuffling. This is cheating.
But only a less than
sterling dealer will do a false shuffle in that way. If he’s
one of the bet in the business, he can get what he wants even while
you’re paying close attention. In this kind of false
shuffle, the dealer cuts the deck, sliding one half through the
other half in such a way that they don’t line up perfectly.
The dealer then will appear to conduct a straight cut while stripping
one half of the deck from the other half, leaving the cards in their
original order. |
