History of Las Vegas

This year Las Vegas celebrated its 100th birthday. Ever since the city site was created in 1905, Las Vegas has been through many interesting faces, which eventually made Las Vegas the Mecca of every gambling man or women on the planet. An overview of Las Vegas history can be found on this page.

1905 – The birth of Las Vegas

1911 - Las Vegas is incorporated

1926 - The first commercial airline flight, Western Airlines, arrives

1931 - Gambling is legalized in Nevada

1941 - El Rancho Vegas becomes the first property to open on the Vegas Strip

1942 - The Last Frontier Hotel opens it doors

1946 - Bugsy Siegel opens the Flamingo Hotel

1959 - The Las Vegas Convention Center hosts its first meeting, the World Congress of Flight

1966 - Howard Hughes settles at the Desert Inn

1975 - Nevada gaming revenues hit the $1 billion mark

1980 - Las Vegas celebrates its 75th birthday

1981 - Las Vegas celebrates the Golden Anniversary of Gaming

1985 - The First National Finals Rodeo is held in Las Vegas

1989 - The Mirage opens it doors on the 22nd of November

1990 - The Excalibur opens . It is the world's largest resort hotel at the time

1992 - The first Las Vegas Bowl college football game is held at the Silver Bowl

1993 - Nevada gaming revenues hit the $6 billion mark

1993 - The MGM Grand Hotel and Theme Park opens on the 18th of December 18 (5,005 rooms / 171,500-sq. ft.) It is the largest resort hotel in the world

1996 - 29.6 million people visit Las Vegas; the state gross gaming revenue totals $7.45 billion

1997 - The New York-New York Hotel & Casino opens on the 3rd of January

1998 - The Bellagio, billed as the most expensive hotel in the world ($1.7 billion), opens on the 15th of October

1998 - A 66-year-old Las Vegas resident wins a $27.58 million progressive Megabucks jackpot at the Palace Station Hotel Casino

1999 - Mandalay Bay opens on March 2 with 3,300 rooms and the Four Seasons Hotel opens with 424 rooms

1999 - The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino opens on the 3rd of May with 3,036 suites

1999 - Paris Las Vegas opens on the first of September

2000 - MGM Grand Inc. announces the purchase of Mirage Resorts Inc., which will be the largest corporate buyout in gaming history

2000 - The new Aladdin Resort & Casino opens on the Strip in August

2003 - In April, Caesars Palace opens the Colosseum, a $95 million contemporary replica of its namesake in Rome and home to Caesars Palace's newest performer, Celine Dion

2004 - Harrah's Entertainment purchases Binion's Horseshoe

2004 – All around Las Vegas mergers are being made. MGM MIRAGE announces plans to purchase the Mandalay Resort Group. One month later, Harrah's Entertainment announces its plans to purchase Caesars Entertainment

2004 - The Strip dims all its lights for the death of President Ronald Reagan. This happened before when President John F. Kennedy, Rat Pack members Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and George Burns passed away

2004 - A $654 million mass transit system called 'the Las Vegas Monorail', is now open for public

2004 - Las Vegas Sands gives new details about its planned $1.6 billion Palazzo casino resort on the Vegas Strip

2005 - Las Vegas celebrates is 100th birthday throughout 2005, beginning with the New Year's fireworks. Las Vegas celebrates its 100th birthday officially on the 15th of May with the world's largest birthday cake and a recreation of the 1905 land auction that started Las Vegas as everyone knows it today
