Charlie Shoten
Most people would not consider Charlie Shoten to be a
professional poker player. For one thing
he is not full time, but rather enjoys the game in his off time from his job as
an Insurance Executive. But, people
often underestimate the aging player who prefers a shaved head and that is the
biggest mistake that anyone could make.
One of the major differences between the bulk of the professional
players and Charlie Shoten is the fact that he does not enter the major
tournaments on a regular basis, but does play in some of the minor tournaments
and continues to be a big winner in the live cash action around the world. Little can be said that is poor about the
play that Charlie Shoten brings to the table as he is aggressive and sneaky and
above all else successful.
He tends to
be so aggressive that he will scare other players away and make a run for the
top in the early goings of the tournament rather than sand bagging back like so
many will do. Shoten has managed to
knock out of the best players in the world early on in the tournaments that he
has played. Shoten prefers to not get a
big head about any of this because he knows that the cards can turn on you in a
minute and a great hand beats a major bluff no matter which way you play it. Shoten
considers poker, even the high stakes cash games, to be knowing more than
learning experiences that pay him, a method that has served him well.
Because
of his status Shoten has decided to turn his attention to the furthering of the
game. While he still plays as much as
possible he now works hard as an educator and bringing to light the thrill that
comes with live poker. Several of his
students have gone on to win World Series of Poker bracelets and they all credit
Shoten with this fortune. He has written
several books on the subject and reveals all of his own personal strategies
that come into play.
Charlie
Shoten has never revealed his true age or date of birth on record. He says that this way people think of him in
a sort of mysterious manner that gives him the edge over some of the younger
players in the game. He likes to keep
people guessing about how old he is and that means that a lot of people will
not give him credit where credit is due.
This all works to his advantage.
