Chris Moneymaker
Coming out of nowhere to take
the top spot didn’t seem like any thing strange to Chris Moneymaker, but to the
rest of the world it was nothing short of amazing. For a career, Accounting was Moneymaker’s
forte and he received a Masters degree to begin the career. Strangely enough, Moneymaker was more than
happy with his life and he simply began playing poker as a means to
unwind. The internet provided a place to
get in some action and maybe make a little money while he was at it. This was the beginning and nowhere near the
end of the story.
The play on the internet
began to get serious and Moneymaker was all to ready. He entered several tournaments and won many
times along the way. The most incredible
tournament won him a reserved seat for the satellite World Series of Poker
seat. Then entry fee was thirty-nine
dollars and Moneymaker jumped at the chance.
Before all was said and done, Moneymaker was on his way from his home in
Tennessee to
sit and play with some of the greatest players that have ever lived.
This was a dream come true
for Moneymaker as he moved up through the ranks bringing with him a nice pile
of chips. The final table would be
prolific. Johnny Chan was among the final
combatants that Moneymaker would have to overcome to claim the top spot. His nerves got the best at one point when he
failed to fold a hand and didn’t realize it until after Chan pointed it
out. This was the only low point for the
entire game and Moneymaker would claim the bracelet and prize money with a
bluff. He held king high against a pair
of nines, went all in and the prize was his.
Following the win Moneymaker
left his job to play professionally and take a job as spokesman for the World
Series of Poker for Harrah’s Casino. He
also continues to play online through Pokerstars, the internet site that
started it all. Moneymaker has
published a highly successful book about his ascent to stardom and maintains
several other positions beyond his professional playing.
Moneymaker was born in 1976
and today at the age of 30 he is still one of the finest competitors in the
poker world. He continues to play in the
World Series of Poker as well as the World Poker tour. He has netted several million dollars in live
tournament play.
