David Williams

Born June 9, 1980 David Williams is a bit of a strange story in the poker world.  Being a rather young player, Williams concentrated his efforts on the card game called Magic the Gathering which has several cash tournaments around the world.  This game is the farthest thing from poker that anyone can imagine as it was originally designed children but gained wide popularity with the older generation as well.  There is little that can be drawn between Magic and poker but somehow Williams managed to make it work.  While playing in the biggest tournament that can be found for Magic Williams was accused of cheating and it was found that his deck was marked, allowing for him to get the best possible card on each cut.  Even though he denied the cheating, Williams was suspended from play for one year during which he took up high stakes poker to fill the void.

Williams found that he was highly skilled in the games that were being played and began to win a fair amount of money in doing so.  He started with Internet play and quickly amassed a good fortune.  Luck would be his lady down the road as he won a seat at the World Series of Poker through an online satellite tournament.  This would be one of the shining moments of his career.  In the 2004 World Series of Poker main event he would reach all the way to the final table and go head to head with Greg “Fossilman” Raymer, another satellite entrant.  The battle was long fought and Williams would eventually fall to Raymer.  He did however take home over three million dollars in prize money making him the highest paid African American player in the main event series.

Today Williams still maintains a huge presence in the poker world but also still plays professionally in the Magic card tournaments as well.  He states that poker is his main effort but Magic is his first love and he will continue to play for fun in the many tournaments around the world. Besides the World Series of Poker, Williams is also a mainstay in the World Poker Tour where he has found great success in all manners of play.  He is also the member of several professional teams that travel the world and manages to be a student in Southern Methodist College at the same time.
