Doyle Brunson
Few people make as much of a mark on a sport as Doyle
Brunson has on poker. Brunson has been
playing poker professionally for more than forty years and still continues to
be a major competitor in the sport and a prolific author on the subject as
well. Brunson was born August 10, 1933
in Longworth, Texas a town of about one hundred
people. As a young man, Brunson was
interested in basketball and running as he regularly had to run to nearby towns
for a variety of reasons. This would then
foster a hope that one day he would become a professional athlete. He continued to work on his game and
eventually received several offers from colleges to play but he chose a nearby
college to stay near home. At one point
he was being looked at by professional basketball scouts but an injury that
nearly crushed his leg ended his hopes of being a star basketball player.
While
in his two year cast and working on his masters degree, Brunson picked up five
card draw poker and used it as a means to pay his expenses while in
college. Following his graduation he
started to work as a business machine salesman.
While working he was invited to a seven card poker game and easily earned
three months salary. This was the boast
he needed and he became a professional poker player a short time later.
The
start of his career was in illegal games around Texas and the surrounding states. This led to his meeting and teaming with
Amarillo Slim as they traveled as rounders looking for games. This was not a good way to do things as they
pooled all their resources to make it to Vegas where the action was legal and
round the clock. It was not long before
the six figure bank roll was depleted. They
decided to make it on their own but remain friends.
Doyle
Brunson blossomed as a player and went on to win ten world series of poker
bracelets, tied with Johnny Chan for the record. Brunson became the first player to win two
consecutive World Series of Poker main events with the 1976 and 1977
series. He has several poker hands named
after him and he appears on several televised poker events every year.
At
73 Brunson is showing no signs of stopping and he continues to be a hot
competitor in the World Series of Poker every year.
