Howard Lederer
As a player there are few that are better than the
prolific Howard Lederer. Known as The
Professor because of his overall demeanor when playing, Howard Lederer is one
of the few players that is actually feared at the tables because he can be an
aggressive and very powerful player to say the least. This has not always been so as Lederer did
not start out as a poker champion, he instead moved his talents to chess. While Lederer was born in Concord,
New Hampshire he moved to New
York to study at Columbia University. He was turned onto chess and quickly became a
great player. New York is full of chess clubs and Lederer
spent as much time in them as possible.
While playing in a chess club he was turned on to poker and learned to
love the game very quickly as he found that reading the opponents was very much
like playing chess. This was that start
that he needed and he moved up the ranks in the local scene, earning a fair
amount of money before moving to Las
Vegas to pursue high stakes poker as a living. This was 1994 and he has remained in Vegas
ever since, raking in the pots at the high stakes tables and making a name for
himself.
As
of 2005 Lederer has two World Series of Poker Bracelets, neither of which is
from the main event. He did however make
it to the final table and placed fifth in the main event for 1997. He has also made several nice finishes in the
World Poker Tour and holds two titles from it.
This is nothing new to Lederer as he is marked as a winner and continues
to move on whether he wins the gold or not.
A sore spot was the Tour Grand Prix when he was eliminated by Tony
Guoga, made famous for his constant berating and belittling of other players. Lederer refused to shake hands with the man,
which nearly caused an international scene.
Besides
being one of the finest poker players to ever live, Lederer is also a world
class author and makes instructional videos to teach others about poker. He has two sisters, one of whom is the now
famous Annie Duke, also a champion poker player. Katy Lederer wrote a book about growing up
with a family of gamblers. Lederer is an
outspoken supporter of his siblings, especially Annie, as he once stepped into
an altercation with Daniel Negreanu for making inappropriate comments about
her.
