Johnny Chan
When speaking of poker the name Johnny Chan springs to
mind in an instant. Few players are as
recognizable as the man called the Orient Express and that is no surprise. The world of poker was taken by surprise when
Chan hit the scene and he has enjoyed so much success that few people can
hardly understand it. He was never in
the business of poker and had never gambled before taking a trip to Vegas when
he was young. To that point he was
involved in the family restaurant business and planned to remain there after
college. The gambling bug caught Chan
when he was twenty one and he left college to become a professional
gambler.
His first year in Vegas brought
him the World Series of Poker main event bracelet. There was little that anyone could about this
because they had not played against many Asian players and he was easily moving
up through the ranks. The tournament was
not short and Chan had to fight for every chip he raked in but he was victorious
in the end nonetheless. What became more
amazing was the fact that he followed this victory with another one the next
year. This caught the attention of a lot
of people and the other players were stunned by his overall command of the
game.
Besides the main event wins at the
World Series of Poker Chan proved that he was a great all around player by
taking the top spots in several of the lower tournaments as well. To date he has ten World Series of Poker
bracelets and has taken more than three million dollars from the tournaments as
well. This is all in addition to his many wins in various cash games and World
Poker Tour tournaments around the world.
Chan
does not wish to be a player all of his life.
Besides the fact that he has six children, he has aspirations to own a
casino someday when he has raised enough money to do so. He also looks forward to the day when he can
retire and pursue his other two loves, pool and ten pin bowling. He knows that there is very little money in
those two games compared to poker so he plays them purely for fun. He also enjoys swimming and travel when he is
not playing in a tournament. Many will
see the cameo appearance of Chan in the hit movie Rounders.
