Kassem Deeb
Kassem Deeb is a foreign born American poker player and a
great one at that. Born November 27.
1946 Deeb emigrated to the US from Lebanon when he was 19 to study at the
University of Utah for mechanical engineering.
He was soon to graduate but a war in his home country caused a lack of
contact between him and his parents who were supporting him during his
education. This was a matter that caused
much peril in the young mans life because he was on a student visa and could
not find employment. He began gambling
in this time period and was making a good living except it was still not enough
to complete his schooling and he was forced to drop out.
This did little to damage his ego as he made
his mark in poker in the area and is still one of the best players in the
game. Despite being virtually unknown in
the poker world, Deeb made sure that he was winning the money when he put his
mind to it. He first concentrated on the
cash games that he could find and that earned him enough to live very well
while he was honing his skills. He was
not in a hurry to make the move to live tournaments because he felt that it
would limit the amount of money that he could make in the cash action. Nonetheless, the call of the honorable World
Series of Poker began to tug at his mind and he soon found himself in the mix
with the best players in the world.
There was little that Deeb could do other than play to the best of his
ability and he found that that was more than enough to best some of the tables
that he sat down to. His only World
Series of Poker bracelet comes in one of the lower games but still offered him
a nice size pot in the end. He has also
placed in the money several times since beginning to play in the main events.
Deeb
does not consider himself to be a lifelong poker player by any stretch. His actual aspirations lie in the degree that
he was so close to achieving and he has stated that he plans to return to the
school to complete the degree. This is
nothing that will take away from his considerable skill though as he has
managed to become one of the toughest competitors in the sport today.
