Paul Phillips
There has been no more controversial player in the world
of poker than Paul Phillips. Despite
being one of he toughest competitors in the game he has single handedly managed
to get himself banned from the World Series of Poker then reinstated then cause
a huge scene by making side deals during the World Poker Tour which caused a
rule change and huge amounts of bad press one time computer programmer. Few professional poker players actually day
jobs and Phillips is one of them. While
in college he wrote and developed a still in use web server and also spent some
time as chief technical officer of a major internet firm which provided the
money that he needed to play poker on a full time basis. The problem remains that Phillips is not the
most well like figure in the sport so he does not always feel welcome but that
does not stop him from playing when he wants to.
He earned the nickname Dot Com from his
business dealings and also spends a considerable amount of time playing poker
on the internet sites, some of which he helped to design. After being reinstated to the World Series of
Poker he chose to only take part in one event in 2002 and placed second for the
low ball tournament. This was his form
of protest in regards to his being banned for making a statement against the
way the casino handles the entry money for the World Series of Poker. Despite all of this he still managed to get
himself a title in the World Poker Tour and bring in over two million dollars
in live tournament prize money.
The
many times that Phillips has allowed his mouth to get the best of him has
adversely affected his career. Poker
great Howard Lederer lists Phillips as one of the best players in the game but
also states that Phillips would do well to leave the rest of the game to the
casino and concentrate on the playing.
But Phillips will have no part of it.
He once again spoke out in 2005 against the players that were chosen for
the Tournament of Champions game, which included Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan.
This did not make him any friends to say
the least.
Phillips
was born on August 9, (date unknown) in San
Francisco, California. Now in what is believed to be his late
twenties to early thirties, Phillips still maintains a status among the many
tournaments.
