Roulette

Roulette means 'Little Wheel' and the game has been in existence for hundreds of years in many different forms. Today the popular forms of Roulette are American Roulette and European Roulette, we'll discuss the differences a little later. Roulette is played on a table divided into betting sections and the center of the table is marked with numbers 0 to 36 and in some cases a double 00 spot. On the wheel are numbered slots, from 0 to 36 and in some instances there is an additional slot with a double 0. The dealer, or Croupier spins the wheel and releases a small ball in the opposite direction that the wheel is spinning and the number that the ball comes to land is the winning number.

Although the object of the game is basically to predict where the ball will land on the wheel, there are many types of bets that a player can place that include what color the ball lands on, what group of numbers that ball may land on, and several others which we will detail below.

Inside Bets these are bets made on the inside layout of the table.

Straight Up Bet - Placing a bet on a single number such as the 7, to make this bet, place the chip in the center of the number.

Split Bet - Placing a bet on two adjacent numbers, also known as a two-number bet. To make this bet, place the chip on the line that separates the numbers.

Street Bet - Placing a bet on any three numbers in a row, this bet is also known as a three-number bet. To make this bet, Place the chip on the outside line at the beginning of the row.

Square Bet - Placing a bet on a section of four numbers, also known as a four-number bet. To make this bet, place the chip on the spot in the center of the four Straight Up Numbers.

Five-Number Line Bet - Placing a bet on five numbers, consisting of 00, 0, 1, 2 and 3. To make this bet, place the chip on the intersection of the dividing lines between 0 and 1.

Six-Number Line Bet Placing a bet on six numbers, comprising two adjacent rows. To make this bet, place the chip on the line above Dozen bets so that it rests between the two rows that you want to cover.

Outside Bets

Column Bet Placing a bet on one of the three vertical columns. To make this bet, place the chip at the bottom of the column.
Dozen Bet Placing a bet on twelve numbers - either High, Middle or Low. To make this bet, place the chip on the First 12, Second 12 or Third 12.

Even-Money Bet Placing a bet on eighteen numbers. To make this bet, place the chip on one of the following squares, Even, Odd, Red, Black, 1-18 or 19-36.

Once the players have made their bets, the Croupier calls No More Bets and then spins the wheel and puts the ball in action. It is possible for more than one player to win, and after the ball has come to rest, the winners are paid. The payouts in Roulette offer chances to win a lot of money with one spin of the wheel and this is the biggest draw to this game, for many gamblers. Although the payouts can vary slightly from casino to casino, the following table is a great guideline to go by.

European Roulette

Bet Name Odds
Straight bet 35:1
Split bet 17:1
Street bet 11:1
Square bet 8:1
Line bet 5:1
Column bet 2:1
Dozen bet 2:1
Even-Money bet 1:1

American Roulette

Bet Name Odds
Straight Up bet 35:1
Split bet 17:1
Street bet 11:1
Square bet 8:1
Five-Number Line bet 6:1
Six-Number Line bet 5:1
Column bet 2:1
Dozen bet 2:1
Even-Money bet 1:1

The single biggest difference between American Roulette and European Roulette is that the American Roulette has a single zero and a double zero on the Roulette Wheel, whereas the European Roulette has only the single zero. There are also minor differences on the layout of the table and the number order on the wheel. The game play is exactly the same in both versions of Roulette.

As you can see by the payout table above, the payout possibilities are huge with a single number or straight up bet paying 35 to 1. If you were to place a $100 bet on a single number and the ball landed on that number you would be paid $3500. But keep in mind that the odds in Roulette do give the house an edge and although picking a winning single number can and does happen, the odds are for the house. Personally I love a challenge and always bet number 27, but look through all the betting possibilities and bet with your head, you'll win in the long run.
